Should it have been a red?

And why isn’t there a Tony Gale Icon?

Obviously it shouldn’t have been. The rule requires him to have been denied a clear goal scoring opportunity. He was on the corner of the box going away from goal after a heavy touch. The greatest players in the history of the game would have had to have pulled something spectacular out of the bag to score from there.

On the other hand, a few people on the match thread are being a bit edgy and saying it was a red because Cresswell touched him.

Also, no ref banned for corruption should ever referee again at any level.

Apparently he's signed up to do a weekly column on something called "west ham zone"

The silence on this from the PL/FA is deafening.

If this had happened to one of the designated "representatives of English football in Europe", the ref would already be hanging from the nearest gallows pole.

Texas, you've only quoted part of Law 12. If you read the preceding part (SENDING-OFF OFFENCES) it includes "denying a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent whose overall movement is towards the offender's goal by an offence punishable by a free kick."

Your interpretation is completely wrong
The mention of INSIDE THE AREA is only there to point out the further consequences ... ie a yellow if the foul was a genuine attempt to tackle a red if you just grab the player etc

Given your complete inability to interpret the laws UEFA have just asked if you are available for the two legs of the Champions League semi finals. If you can give evidence of previous match fixing or taking of bribes you can have the final as well

The Law states…
“ DENYING A GOAL OR AN OBVIOUS GOAL-SCORING OPPORTUNITY

Where a player denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by a handball offence the player is sent off wherever the offence occurs.

Where a player commits an offence against an opponent within their own penalty area which denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and the referee awards a penalty kick, the offending player is cautioned if the offence was an attempt to play the ball; in all other circumstances (e.g. holding, pulling, pushing, no possibility to play the ball etc.) the offending player must be sent off.

A player, sent-off player, substitute or substituted player who enters the field of play without the required referee's permission and interferes with play or an opponent and denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity is guilty of a sending-off offence

The following must be considered:
distance between the offence and the goal
general direction of the play
likelihood of keeping or gaining control of the ball
location and number of defenders. “

The Cresswell offense was NOT inside the area…I BELIEVE
Therefore does not apply…

It is a foul because there was a pull on his arm, however minimal. It was silly by Cresswell.

it was DOGSO because he would have got a shot off and his final touch had the ball rolling only a tiny bit away from goal, he wasn't heading for the corner flag.

The ref was awful but he got this one correct

An account from Haaland when he was at Dortmund. Seems he learnt nothing. But then he ( the german ref ) probably know he aint up to it and gets decisions wrong hence the psychological over compensation of arrogance and not looking at VAR to prove he got it wrong as he would be having to reverse his wrong decisions every match.

Haaland's comment and note the Dortmund manager also booked for having the audacity to tell the truth like Moyes.

Dortmund had their own shout for a penalty turned down, with manager Marco Rose later being sent off by Zwayer for dissent.

On that penalty decision, Haaland said: “Clear penalty. I asked him [Zwayer] why didn’t you go and look [at VAR] and he said ‘no need’ like arrogant. I have to calm down a little bit now but yeah he was arrogant, I won’t say more.”

Probably one of the worst referees I've seen.
Apart from the red debate the stopping the game when Lyon players were obviously time-wasting and allowing the throw in to be taken again.
Also they said when Creswell got sent off there was seven seconds left of the first half he must have played another two minutes extra at least.
Disgusting performance from the kraut.

Exactly this! which means that once Dembele had recovered from his shit first touch which had taken him away from goal, because Zouma was running in a straight line back towards goal and was almost level with play, there is no way that he wouldnt have then been in between Dembele, who would have been out wide on the edge of the area, and the goal.

My first thought with Zouma was he wasnt busting a gut because he felt he didnt have too as Cresswell had him moving away from goal. I didnt think there was any chance of it being a red, Zouma was almost level and more central to the goal.
